Why #GivingTuesday Matters

First we had Black Friday. Then came Cyber Monday. Now we have almost a full week of bargains and sales and doorbuster deals so that we can knock out our whole Christmas list at once - for 50% off. With so many things that we just have to get for ourselves and others, giving can almost become an afterthought or a second priority. Giving Tuesday is here to remind us that while we may need those super cute BOGO shoes, there are others who need our help much more.

#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Charities, community organizations, schools and individuals wanting to make an impact by giving back have joined together on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving to kick off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. Since its inaugural year in 2012, #GivingTuesday has become a movement that celebrates and supports giving and philanthropy.

But why today? Why me? With all of the craziness of the holiday season, many people either forget or don't think they have the ability to make a gift that will have an impact. Giving Tuesday isn't about making one gift that will change the world. It's about making a gift that is significant to you, and joining in with the rest of the world in celebrating a season of giving rather than getting.

Join me in making a gift this #GivingTuesday - to your school or favorite charity, or take the time to discover a new organization making an impact in your community. Tweet about it, share it, encourage others to give. Here at The Gift, we see the impact of giving everyday through our clients. While we might have gotten some great deals this weekend, the most valuable dollars we spend this holiday season will be the ones we give today.
